Because English was my second language, writing has always been a place of solace for me—I’ve always felt more comfortable expressing myself in the written word than spoken word. I truly believe that writing in all its forms has the potential to communicate, connect, redefine, and transform.

At LATS we believe multilingualism is a strength.

While we offer writing support in English only, our student staff is familiar with a diversity of languages with a wide-range of comfort levels. With each writing facilitator, you'll see a list of languages they're familiar with, as well as how comfortable they are in each of those languages. Five-diamonds (◆◆◆◆◆) means fluent and one-diamond (◆◇◇◇◇) means elementary proficiency. Being able to think in multiple languages will only make your writing richer. We hope by showcasing our staff's multilingualism, you feel more comfortable exploring the writing process in different languages with them.

    LATS Writing Tutor

     Language(s): Spanish ◆◆◆◇◇

Hello! My name is Alessandra, and I am a fourth-year student majoring in English and Communications from Seventh College. I aim to meet students where they’re at with their writing and tailor sessions to the specific challenges they want to address. As someone who grew up with dyslexia, I know that engaging with writing can change from student to student based on individual experiences. I needed lots of support in my early years engaging with writing, and I can attest that being able to ask for help is a strength rather than a weakness. I firmly believe that everyone has the potential to become an excellent writer. As a LATS facilitator, my goal is to foster a judgment-free space where you can explore your unique voice and develop confidence as both a communicator and writer. If you book a session with me, you will enter a space where you are respected, heard, and supported. The key to great writing starts with removing self-doubt and allowing yourself the freedom to learn and grow.

Hi, I’m Alex, a fourth-year English Literature major with a Theater minor at ERC College. To me, writing is a way to express, explore, and understand oneself as an individual. As an international student, I enjoy writing in different languages and seeing the difference in my writing. Sometimes it could be really hard to express yourself while writing, especially when writing in different languages. Moreover, writing could be a very lonely process where it’s easy to get lost. Thus, as a LATS facilitator, I am here to support you with empathy along this writing journey. I hope to help you find your unique voice in your words and support your growth not only in writing but also during your time here.

Hey! My name is Annamaria, I am a second year ERC student studying Human Biology and minoring in Global Health. Having navigated the MMW series, I know first hand how intimidating college writing can be. Still, I have found writing to be useful in just about every situation, from mastering the art of emailing to using writing as a creative outlet. I hope to work with you to navigate the ups and downs of college writing in a way that makes sense to you! Together we can work to build those life long skills in your own unique way.

Hi there! My name’s Annika, and I’m a 4th year Literature/Writing major from Revelle College. With all my years at university, my relationship with writing has been a fluctuating monstrosity—one day I can write full pages, the next I’m wracking my brain to get even a single word down. But through it all, I believe the most important aspect of writing is finding out what I care about it, and the best way to figure that out is finding a comfortable space that offers me the room to talk through the process. A space I am now offering to you. I won’t promise you it’ll be easy, nor that we’ll find the answer to every question you have. But I am wholeheartedly committed to giving you the same tools I have learned as a writing facilitator, to embrace your experiences and preserve them in your work. Writing, at its core, is a human act—and writing cannot be human when you aren’t allowed your voice. No matter what assignment or your experience with academic writing, we will figure it out together. By the end, I hope I can help you fall in love with writing the way I have. (Also, prepare to use a lot of whiteboard. I love that whiteboard.)

Hi, I'm Dylan, and I'm a 3rd year Environmental Chemistry major in Seventh College. I have experience in both academic and creative writing, and I am familiar with the joys and struggles that come with both. I value writing as a way to convey thoughts, feelings, and unique stories and make the world a little more interesting! As a LATS facilitator, I aim to help you cultivate your unique voice and feel more comfortable expressing your ideas in written form.

Hey there! My name is Grace, and I'm a Revellian and fourth year Anthropology: Archaeology concentration student with minors in French Literature and Classical Studies. Most of the time it feels like writing is the best thing to have happened since sliced bread, but sometimes it can feel like a looming, impending doom. But it doesn’t have to be! The process should make you always want to write more, and I want to help you discover that desire. Together, we can cultivate your writing into a transformative space that allows you to express your thoughts without any limits and develop your confidence as a writer.

Hi! My name is Janice, and I’m a Marshall fourth-year double majoring in Linguistics and Literature. I once read somewhere that nervousness and excitement have similar physical reactions, so psychologically, one emotion can be reframed as the other. It kinda blew my mind, and it shifted my perspective on how I approach writing, especially when that essay seems impossible to complete. In a university system where writing can feel confusing, isolating, and rigid, I hope my coworkers and I can help you establish where you are in an assignment, figure out where we'd like to be, and discover that the road to getting there isn’t paved with unknowns, but with wonder. Because writing isn’t just a vessel for your voice, it’s you.

Hey! I’m Justin, a second year Political Science major from Seventh. I’ve always seen the privilege to write as a channel for activism and the means for change amidst injustice. Beyond this , writing has always been an enjoyable part of my learning journey, and the ability to guide others through their own has been arguably more rewarding. To me, writing is all about figuring out what it is you want to say. Putting pen to paper can always seem daunting at first, but the writing process just needs some time to think to kick things off. Plus, it often help us learn so much about ourselves. I look forward to supporting and working alongside you, no matter your writing style!

Hi! I'm Okalani, a fourth-year Political Science/Public Policy major from Marshall College! As an individual who finds solace in the written word, I love using the page as a space to use my voice, on my own terms. The writing process is one that has no set methodology. College writing can seem extremely daunting at first, especially in instances where certain assignments urge students to use their writerly voices (as if several of us haven't been burdened with strict formatting requirements for the duration of our high school careers). As a facilitator, I want to serve as an outlet through which you can find your voice in a manner that you see fit—without the overwhelm that comes with trying to modify it for a set of criteria. I truly believe that your writing evolves as you do, so I strive to help guide that growth as you continue your journey at UCSD!

I love writing, but I will admit I have been faced with many obstacles in my writing journey, which, honestly, have made me love it even more. Seeking advice from teachers and tutors has taught me many skills. I know writing is hard, but it is necessary for every field and career; it is a form of communication. I am patient, efficient, and honest- I can't wait to work together :)

Hello! My name is Supriyaa, and I’m a fourth year from Revelle. I’m majoring in Cognitive Psychology, and minoring in Design and Data Science. As an international student, my relationship with writing has been rather complicated and has evolved over the years. Growing up, I believed that perfect grammar and an extensive vocabulary were hallmarks of a good writing piece. Over time, writing became much more than a skill I had to hone — it became a place of solitude and a means of expressing my lived experiences. As a LATS facilitator, my goal is to empower you and create a judgment-free environment that fosters your unique voice. Writing does not have to be daunting, and I would be happy to embark on this process with you!

Hello! My name is Sydney, and writing is my favorite challenge. Even though it's my passion, I know that writing can put the best of us in a slump, myself included. I can provide my best assistance when it comes to argumentative and explanatory papers (i.e. College Writing Program assignments), creative fiction and nonfiction, and even poetry, and I’d be happy to help you get more comfortable with these types of writing. Together, we can work to build your confidence with writing, and hopefully, I can show you that it’s not as scary as it seems!
